세상 한가운데서 피어나는 성덕

Holiness Blooming in the Midst of the World

문득 이런 생각을 해봅니다.

옛 속담에 "말은 제주도로, 사람은 서울로 보내라"는 말이 있습니다. 말은 넓은 초원에서 뛰어야 제 본성을 발휘하고, 사람은 세상의 중심에서 부딪히고 단련되어야 비로소 그 그릇이 커진다는 뜻입니다. 이 오래된 지혜가 오늘 우리가 나누는 이 꿈과 묘하게 맞닿아 있다는 생각이 듭니다.

시편을 읽다 보면 그 시대의 신앙인들이 얼마나 꾸밈없는 진심 어린 말로, 삶의 한복판에서 하느님을 불렀는지가 느껴집니다. 시편은 서재에서 다듬어진 신학 논문이 아니라, 광야와 전쟁터와 눈물 속에서 터져 나온 영혼의 절규였습니다. 그런데 오늘날 우리는 어떻습니까. 신앙을 삶에서 길어 올리기보다, 교리서와 문헌 속에 가두어 두려는 경향이 없지 않습니다. 공자왈 맹자왈 하듯 과거의 언어를 현재의 삶에 그대로 이식하려 할 때, 신앙은 생동하는 힘을 잃고 박제된 관념으로 남을 위험이 있습니다.

제가 말하고자 하는 핵심은 바로 이것입니다. 성인이 된다는 것은 수도원 담장 안에 봉쇄되어 세상과 단절함으로써 이루어지는 것이 아닙니다. 또한 신학적 지식을 정교하게 쌓아 올린 학자를 길러내는 것이 목표도 아닙니다. 성덕은 세상 한가운데서, 각자의 삶의 자리에서 피어나는 것입니다.

에페소 신자들에게 보낸 서간에서 바오로 사도는 이렇게 말합니다.

"그분께서는 어떤 이는 사도로, 어떤 이는 예언자로, 어떤 이는 복음 선포자로, 어떤 이는 목자나 교사로 세우셨습니다. 이는 성도들이 직무를 수행할 수 있도록 그들을 준비시켜, 그리스도의 몸을 세우게 하시려는 것입니다." (에페 4,11-12)

바오로의 이 말씀은 단순히 교회 직무의 분류가 아닙니다. 하느님께서는 당신의 일을 이루시기 위해 다양한 자리에 다양한 사람을 세우신다는 선언입니다. 의사, 법조인, 교육자, 예술가, 상인, 노동자 — 각계각층의 전문인들이 저마다의 자리에서 성덕을 향한 같은 열망을 품고 한데 모인다면, 그 공동체는 단순한 신심 모임을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 풍요로운 힘을 지니게 될 것입니다. 서로 다른 삶의 언어를 가진 이들이 한 식탁에 모여 신앙을 나눌 때, 성덕은 비로소 살아있는 현실의 언어로 말하기 시작합니다.

세상에 뿌리내린 성인, 그것이 우리 시대가 필요로 하는 성덕의 모습이 아닐까요?!

A thought came to me quite unexpectedly, and I share it gently.

There is an old Korean proverb that says, "Send horses to Jeju Island, and send people to Seoul." A horse must run across open fields to fulfill its nature, and a person must venture into the heart of the world — to struggle, to be refined, to grow — before their true capacity can emerge. 

I find this ancient wisdom strangely resonant with the dream we have been sharing.

When I read the Psalms, I am struck by how the faithful of that era called upon God with unadorned, heartfelt words — right in the thick of their lives. The Psalms were not polished theological dissertations composed in quiet studies. They were the cries of souls erupting from deserts, battlefields, and tears. And yet today, do we not sometimes tend to confine faith within the pages of catechisms and documents rather than drawing it up from the well of lived experience? When we try to transplant the language of the past directly onto the present — reciting old formulas as though they were magic words — faith risks losing its living power and becoming a preserved relic rather than a breathing reality.

This is the heart of what I wish to say. Becoming a saint is not achieved by withdrawing behind monastery walls and cutting oneself off from the world. Nor is the goal to produce scholars of finely layered theological knowledge. Holiness blooms in the midst of the world — in the very place where each of us stands.

Saint Paul writes to the Ephesians:

"He gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, in building up the body of Christ." (Eph 4:11-12)

These words are not merely a classification of church roles. They are a declaration that God raises up different people in different places to accomplish His work. Physicians, lawyers, educators, artists, merchants, laborers — when people of every profession and walk of life gather together, each carrying in their own place the same longing for holiness, that community will possess a richness of strength far beyond any ordinary devotional group. When people who speak different languages of life sit at the same table to share their faith, holiness begins at last to speak in the living language of the present world.

A saint rooted in the world — is that not the face of holiness that our age most needs?!
