개신교 신자들이 가톨릭 신자들보다 더 잘산다는 말은 정말 사실일까?!

신앙과 돈에 대한 질문의 묵상

오랫동안 마음 한편에 생각하게 만드는 의문이 있었습니다.  최근 우연히 접한 매거진 동아의 한 글을 읽으며, 그 의문을 다시 떠올리게 되었습니다. 그래서 오늘은 그 글에서 제기된 내용과 함께, 신앙과 삶에 대해 우리 모두가 한 번쯤 생각해 볼 만한 질문을 나누고자 합니다.

최성락 경영학 박사의 「개신교 신자들이 가톨릭 신자보다 더 잘사는 이유」(매거진 동아, 2026.5.23)라는 글은 독일 사회학자 막스 베버의 《프로테스탄트 윤리와 자본주의 정신》과 스위스 경제연구소의 연구를 소개하며, 개신교 문화가 근면·절약·자기 책임을 강조하고 이러한 가치관이 경제적 성과와 연결될 수 있다고 설명합니다.

실제로 연구에 따르면 스위스의 개신교 지역은 가톨릭 지역보다 평균소득이 다소 높게 나타났고, 노동시간 단축이나 정부의 재분배 정책에 대한 찬성 비율도 상대적으로 낮았다고 합니다.

그런데 이 글을 읽으며 문득 이런 질문이 생겼습니다.

과연 하느님께서는 경제적으로 성공한 사람을 더 사랑하실까요?!

사도 바오로는 말씀합니다.

"일하기 싫어하는 자는 먹지도 말라." (2테살로니카 3,10)

근면과 성실은 분명 성경적 가치입니다. 그러나 그 말씀의 목적은 단순히 돈을 많이 벌라는 데 있는 것이 아니라, 각자가 맡은 책임과 소명을 충실히 살아가라는 데 있습니다.

그렇다면 다시 질문하게 됩니다.

노동의 목적은 부자가 되는 것일까요, 아니면 하느님께 받은 소명을 충실히 살아가는 것일까요?!

예수님께서는 화려한 삶보다 사랑과 섬김의 삶을 보여 주셨습니다. 사도들 역시 대부분 부유한 사람들이 아니었습니다. 또한 교회 역사 속 수많은 성인들은 세상의 성공보다 하느님의 뜻을 우선 선택했습니다.

그래서 또 묻게 됩니다.

하느님께서는 나의 재산을 보실까요, 아니면 나의 마음을 보실까요?!

가톨릭 교회는 부 자체를 죄라고 가르치지 않습니다. 정직하게 일하고, 가족을 책임지며, 공동체를 위해 봉사하는 것은 훌륭한 일입니다. 그러나 동시에 그 재물이 사랑과 나눔을 위해 사용되기를 가르칩니다.

예수님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

"너희는 먼저 하느님의 나라와 그 의로움을 찾아라. 그러면 이 모든 것도 곁들여 받게 될 것이다."

(마태오 6,33)

결국 중요한 것은 개신교가 더 잘사는지, 가톨릭이 더 잘사는지가 아닐 것입니다.

더 중요한 질문은 이것입니다.

"나는 지금 하느님께서 맡기신 삶을 얼마나 충실히 살아가고 있는가?"

경제적 성공은 삶의 한 결과일 수는 있지만 신앙의 목적은 아닙니다. 하느님께서 바라시는 것은 많은 재산보다도 사랑과 성실함으로 살아가는 충실한 삶일 것입니다.

Is It Really True That Protestants Are Wealthier Than Catholics?!

A Reflection on Faith, Work, and Wealth

For a long time, I have carried a question in my heart—one that occasionally returns and invites deeper reflection. Recently, I happened to read an article that brought this question back to mind. I would like to share these thoughts, not as a conclusion, but as a reflection for all of us to consider together.

The article, "Why Protestants Are Wealthier Than Catholics" by Dr. Choi Seong-rak (Magazine Donga, May 23, 2026), discusses the ideas of sociologist Max Weber in The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism and research conducted in Switzerland. The article suggests that Protestant culture has traditionally emphasized diligence, thrift, personal responsibility, and hard work, and that these values may be connected to economic success.

According to the study, Protestant regions in Switzerland showed slightly higher average incomes than Catholic regions and were generally less supportive of shorter working hours, wealth redistribution, and greater government intervention.

As I read, a question came to mind:

Does God truly love those who are economically successful more than others?!

Saint Paul wrote:

"Anyone unwilling to work should not eat." (2 Thessalonians 3:10)

Hard work and responsibility are certainly biblical values. Yet the purpose of this teaching is not simply to accumulate wealth, but to faithfully fulfill the responsibilities and vocation entrusted to each of us.

This leads to another question:

Is the purpose of work to become wealthy, or to faithfully live out the vocation God has given us?

Jesus Himself did not live a life of worldly luxury. His life was marked by love, service, and sacrifice. Most of the Apostles were not wealthy people. Throughout history, countless saints chose God's will over worldly success.

So we may ask:

Does God look first at our possessions, or at our hearts?!

The Catholic Church does not teach that wealth itself is evil. Honest work, caring for one's family, and contributing to society are noble pursuits. At the same time, the Church teaches that material blessings should be used with generosity, compassion, and a concern for others.

Jesus said:

"Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you besides." (Matthew 6:33)

In the end, the most important question is not whether Protestants or Catholics are wealthier.

The more important question is:

"How faithfully am I living the life that God has entrusted to me?"

Economic success may be one outcome of a life well lived, but it is not the ultimate purpose of faith. What God desires most is not the size of our wealth, but a life marked by faithfulness, love, humility, and service.

Reflection:

"The true measure of a faithful life is not how much wealth we accumulate, but how faithfully we use God's gifts in love and service." 

"신앙의 참된 기준은 얼마나 많은 재산을 모았는가가 아니라, 하느님께서 주신 선물을 얼마나 사랑과 봉사 안에서 사용했는가에 있다."
