The Visit of the Wise Men

동방 박사들의 방문

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, during the time of King Herod, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem and asked, 

예수님께서는 헤로데 임금 때에 유다 베들레헴에서 태어나셨다. 그러자 동방에서 박사들이 예루살렘에 와서,

"Where is the new baby king of the Jews? 

“유다인들의 임금으로 태어나신 분이 어디 계십니까?

We saw his star when it came up in the sky, and we have come to honor him."

우리는 동방에서 그분의 별을 보고 그분께 경배하러 왔습니다.” 하고 말하였다.

When King Herod heard this, he was very worried, and all the people in Jerusalem were worried too.

이 말을 듣고 헤로데 임금을 비롯하여 온 예루살렘이 깜짝 놀랐다.

He called together all the important priests and the teachers of the law, 

헤로데는 백성의 수석 사제들과 율법 학자들을 모두 모아 놓고,

and he asked them where the chosen King was going to be born.

메시아가 태어날 곳이 어디인지 물어보았다.

They answered him, 

그들이 헤로데에게 말하였다.

"In Bethlehem of Judea, because a messenger of God wrote this long ago: 

“유다 베들레헴입니다. 사실 예언자가 이렇게 기록해 놓았습니다.

'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least important city in Judah; 

‘유다 땅 베들레헴아 너는 유다의 주요 고을 가운데 결코 가장 작은 고을이 아니다.

because a leader will come from you, and he will take care of my people Israel like a shepherd.'"

너에게서 통치자가 나와 내 백성 이스라엘을 보살피리라.’”

Then Herod called the wise men to a secret meeting and found out from them the exact time the star appeared.

그때에 헤로데는 박사들을 몰래 불러 별이 나타난 시간을 정확히 알아내고서는,

He sent them to Bethlehem and said, 

그들을 베들레헴으로 보내면서 말하였다.

"Go and look very hard for the child. 

“가서 그 아기에 관하여 잘 알아보시오. 

When you find him, tell me, so that I can also go and honor him."

그리고 그 아기를 찾거든 나에게 알려 주시오. 나도 가서 경배하겠소.”

After they spoke with the king, they left. 

그들은 임금의 말을 듣고 길을 떠났다.

The star that they had seen in the East went ahead of them, 

그러자 동방에서 본 별이 그들을 앞서 가다가,

until it stopped over the place where the child was.

아기가 있는 곳 위에 이르러 멈추었다.

They were very happy to see the star, 

그들은 그 별을 보고 더없이 기뻐하였다.

and when they went into the house, they saw the child with his mother, Mary. 

그리고 그 집에 들어가 어머니 마리아와 함께 있는 아기를 보고 

They bowed down to the ground and honored him.

땅에 엎드려 경배하였다. 

Then they opened their bags of treasure and gave him gifts of gold, sweet-smelling incense, and special oil.

또 보물 상자를 열고 아기에게 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드렸다.

Because they had a dream that warned them not to go back to Herod, 

그들은 꿈에 헤로데에게 돌아가지 말라는 지시를 받고, 

they went home to their own country using a different road.

다른 길로 자기 고장에 돌아갔다.

Running Away to Egypt

이집트로 피신하시다

After they left, an angel from the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and said, 

박사들이 돌아간 뒤, 꿈에 주님의 천사가 요셉에게 나타나서 말하였다.

"Get up, take the child and his mother, and run away to Egypt. 

“일어나 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이집트로 피신하여,

Stay there until I tell you to leave. 

내가 너에게 일러 줄 때까지 거기에 있어라.

Herod is going to look for the child to kill him."

헤로데가 아기를 찾아 없애 버리려고 한다.”

Joseph got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and left for Egypt.

요셉은 일어나 밤에 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이집트로 가서,

He stayed there until Herod died, 

헤로데가 죽을 때까지 거기에 있었다.

so that the words the Lord spoke through the prophet would come true: "I called my son out of Egypt."

주님께서 예언자를 통하여, “내가 내 아들을 이집트에서 불러내었다.” 하신 말씀이 이루어지려고 그리된 것이다.

The Killing of the Little Boys

헤로데가 아기들을 학살하다

When Herod found out that the wise men had tricked him, he became very angry. 

그때에 헤로데는 박사들에게 속은 것을 알고 크게 화를 내었다. 

He gave an order to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and the area around it who were two years old and younger. 

그리고 사람들을 보내어, 박사들에게서 정확히 알아낸 시간을 기준으로,

He chose this age because of the time he had learned from the wise men.

베들레헴과 그 온 일대에 사는 두 살 이하의 사내아이들을 모조리 죽여 버렸다.

Then the words spoken by the prophet Jeremiah came true: 

그리하여 예레미야 예언자를 통하여 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다.

"A voice was heard in Ramah, crying and making very sad sounds; 

“라마에서 소리가 들린다. 울음소리와 애끊는 통곡 소리. 

Rachel crying for her children, and she did not want anyone to comfort her, because her children were dead."

라헬이 자식들을 잃고 운다. 자식들이 없으니 위로도 마다한다.”

Coming Back from Egypt

이집트에서 돌아오시다

After Herod died, an angel from the Lord came to Joseph in a dream in Egypt and said,

헤로데가 죽자, 꿈에 주님의 천사가 이집트에 있는 요셉에게 나타나서 말하였다.

"Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the country of Israel. 

“일어나 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 가거라. 

The people who wanted to kill the child are dead."

아기의 목숨을 노리던 자들이 죽었다.”

Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the country of Israel.

요셉은 일어나 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 들어갔다.

But when he heard that Archelaus was the new king of Judea instead of his father Herod, 

그러나 아르켈라오스가 아버지 헤로데를 이어 유다를 다스린다는 말을 듣고, 

he was afraid to go back there. 

그곳으로 가기를 두려워하였다.

And because he was given a warning in a dream, he left for the area of Galilee.

그러다가 꿈에 지시를 받고 갈릴래아 지방으로 떠나,

He went and lived in a town called Nazareth, 

나자렛이라고 하는 고을로 가서 자리를 잡았다. 

so that the words spoken by the prophets would come true: "He will be called a Nazorean."

이로써 예언자들을 통하여 “그는 나자렛 사람이라고 불릴 것이다.” 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다.
