Donations |
| United Nations World Food
Program (WFP). This is the frontline UN organization fighting hunger and the
world’s largest food aid organization, working in 80 countries. WFP provides food to
save lives in emergencies. It also provides food for development projects, aimed at
enabling people to feed themselves. These projects include “food for education,”
where children who attend school are rewarded with food for themselves and often for their
families as well. Other projects include “food for work,” where people help to
build infrastructure (roads, wells, small businesses) in their own communities in exchange
for food. WFP works hard to make every dollar, every grain of food reach the hungry,
keeping its administrative overhead to less than 9%. WFP has some 5,000 extremely
dedicated staff workers throughout the world. Sadly, eighteen were killed in 1998-1999
while providing food to the hungry. |

| The table above shows the number of donations made at the Hunger Site – that is,
the number of people who donated food by clicking on the Donate Free Food button. The
weight calculations are based upon the conversion factors explained on our Frequent
Questions page. Figures are current through the date shown, usually the previous day. As
you can see, the number of donations varies from day to day, and tends to be higher on
weekdays than on weekends. The amount of food given with each donation depends on the
number of sponsors for any given day. Each sponsor for the day pays for 1/4 cup of food
per donation. If there are 4 sponsors for the day, then each donation is 1 cup. If there
are 5 sponsors for the day, then each donation is 1 1/4 cups. If there are 6 sponsors for
the day, then each donation is 1 1/2 cups, and so on.
On a day that there are 5 sponsors and people make 200,000 donations, there will be a
total of 200,000 donations of 1 1/4 cups of food. This is about 14.2 (metric) tons of
food, or 14,176 kilos. In non-metric terms, this is about 15.6 tons of food, or 31,250
pounds.
On a day that there are 6 sponsors and people make 200,000 donations, there will be a
total of 200,000 donations of 1 1/2 cups of food. This is about 17 (metric) tons of food,
or 17,012 kilos. In non-metric terms, this is about 18.8 tons of food, or 37,500 pounds.
From this you can see what a difference each additional sponsor makes. On a day with
200,000 donations, each additional sponsor contributes about 2,836 kilos or 6,250 pounds
of food – roughly 3 tons of food. |
