23 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority ? " 23 예수께서 성전에 들어 가서 가르치고 계실 때에 대사제들과 백성의 원로들이 와서 "당신은 무슨 권한으로 이런 일들을 하고, 누가 이런 권한을 주었습니까?" 하고 물었다. 24 Jesus said to them, " I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things 24 예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. " 내가 당신들에게 하나 묻겠는데 만약 당신들이 대답하면, 나 또한 내가 무슨 권한으로 이런 일들을 하는지 말하겠다. 25 Did the baptism of Jhon come from heaven , or was it of human origin ? " And they argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him ?' 25 요한은 누구에게서 권한을 받아 세례를 베풀었느냐? 하늘이 준 것이냐? 사람이 준 것이냐?" 하고 반문하시자 그들은 자기들끼리 "그 권한을 하늘이 주었다고 하면 왜 그를 믿지 않았느냐 할 것이고 26 But If we say, 'Of human origin,' we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard Jhon as a prophet." 26 사람이 주었다고 하면 모두들 요한을 예언자로 여기고 있으니 군중이 가만 있지 않을 테지?" 하고 의논한 끝에 27 So they answered Jesus, "we do not know." And he said to them, 'Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 27 그래서 그들은 "우리는 모르오"라고 대답하였고 그래서 예수님께서는 그들에게 다음과 같이 말씀하셨다. "나 역시 내가 하고 있는 이 일들이 무슨 권능으로 하는지 너희에게 말하지 않겠다."
